Last week my Katy Reid had her first “dress for success” event at school. Earlier in the year, her teacher sent home a letter explaining the event. On the last Wednesday of every month, her teacher wants them to dress the part of a successful student. Dressing the part helps us identify with the position we are in. In this case the children are becoming more mature, successful students so a day to “dress the part” was a great idea to me.
I took Katy Reid shopping one night. We picked out a new dress, one that had style and class all in one ensemble. We picked out a few accessories to help add to the look of a successful student. I had to step back a few times and just watch my girl. She’s growing up on me and I was so excited to help her get ready for this special event. Independently she matched colors and patterns, she maturely checked prices and consulted my help for finding the bargains. It was a fun night for both of us and I hope she will tuck it away as a fun memory with mom.
The day had finally come for her to put her ensemble together and “dress for success”. Thankfully God had worked it all out and instead of my normal 12 hour shift that day (I’m not at home to help her get ready those mornings) I had a class and was able to help her with hair and a little shine on her face. I had the chance to remind her that clothes and makeup are fun but God says over and over in His word that beauty is an inside job. Heart first. Always. Good reminder for momma too.
I kissed her forehead bye. Told her how proud she makes me. And jumped in my car for my 45 minute commute to work.
The praying started.
God, when did she get so big?!
Can you slow this down a little bit?!
Can you help me? I want to teach her the right things.
Protect her at school.
Help her be a friend to others.
Build up her teacher, give her strength for those 22 children.
God thank you for giving her a new outfit for this day.
The outfit. There it was. BOOM. Like a bolt to my chest.
His word came alive. The verse I had helped my kids memorize over 2 years ago.
“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all- purpose garment. Never be without it. ”
Colossians 3:12-14 The Message
And God spoke to me in one of the most closest times he ever has.
I have a wardrobe picked out for you.
Are you wearing it?
Are you caring with compassion?
Do you bring kindness to conversations?
Are you being humble in every place showing quiet strength?
Are you walking in self-discipline?
Are you forgiving before accusing?
And then like church bells in my head I kept hearing Him over and over.
Basic but ALL PURPOSEFUL.
I wept with thankfulness. Thanking God for my commute where he can speak to my heart. Thanking Him that while trying to clothe my daughter he clothes me.
