I picked up my girl from preschool this morning and was excited to tell her we were going home to make play dough after we finished lunch. I was slightly rushed through my lunch :p as she kept asking “Where’s the play dough mom?” I don’t think she understood we were going to MAKE it and that it had not been manufactured! Ha!
This is a super easy recipe and will be ready in 5 minutes! The best part is that its not toxic at all and very inexpensive to make. Very natural for your little one’s hands, so if you get distracted and they take a bite it’s ok :p
Here is what you will need:
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup of salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 Tablespoon of ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons of gingerbread spice (this is a new product and we found it at Walmart)
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 cup of water
optional: Doterra Holiday joy essential oil
First mix all your dry ingredients.
Then add your coconut oil to water over low heat.
Add dry ingredients to warm water and stir. As you stir the mixture will form a thick batter. Cook over low heat until thick dough is formed.
Knead it until it becomes smooth!
To really add holiday scent to the dough I added Doterra’s Holiday Joy essential oil (just 4-5 drops) and kneaded it into the dough! This also provides aromatherapy to uplift mood for the child playing with the dough! So if you have a Grinch in your house toss them the play dough, they never have to know your secrets! 😉
Your dough is ready for play!! This is also a great gift idea! Teachers in your life would love it, children in your Sunday school class, your nieces or nephews, or start making it with your child as a Christmas tradition! Just put it in a fun Christmas container, decorate with a tag and a bow and make a child’s day! It smells sooooooooo good!!
My sister (who taught elementary school before she had babies) is always so creative with how she is implementing books into day to day activities with her girls. She has inspired me to make sure I’m getting my kids on my lap with a good book! It was the perfect day for one of my childhood favorites!
Let me know if you make it!! And if you need a boost in your mood just go smell your kid’s play dough! 😀
